Commenting on the work of East Lothian Foodbank and other local food initiatives and the generous support they have received from local residents and organisations, Douglas Alexander MP said:

“It is deeply concerning that so many people in our communities are still experiencing food poverty and having to turn to foodbanks for support, especially at this time of year.

“It underlines the importance of taking urgent steps to reduce the underlying causes of this food insecurity and reducing the reliance on emergency food parcels.

“However, as long as that need exists it is a tribute to neighbours’ willingness to help neighbours that the Foodbank and other local food initiatives are on hand to assist those who require help.

“They are only able to provide that help thanks to the remarkable generosity and support of local people and organisations, who continue to donate food and money to aid these good causes.”
