Douglas Alexander MP for Lothian East constituency
Douglas Alexander MP has visited multi award-winning local business and visitor attraction NB Distillery on the outskirts of North Berwick.
Mr Alexander met with the distillery owner and manager Jamie MacDonald and was given a tour of the production facility to learn more about its range of world class spirits, which began with NB Gin in 2013.
As well as producing the various spirit brands, the distillery also offers tours, hosts corporate events and private parties, while its Cellar Door Shop offers a range of gifts unique to the distillery.
Speaking after the visit Douglas Alexander MP said:
“After starting out from the founders’ kitchen, NB Distillery has become an established and successful brand in the Scottish spirits industry. I was delighted to have this opportunity to visit their production facility and find out more about the distillery and the plans for developing the business.
“As well as offering a five-star visitor experience here in East Lothian, the distillery’s award-winning range of products are contributing to the county’s reputation for food and drink excellence. NB Distillery’s story is an inspirational one and I hope it has a bright future ahead of it.”
Jamie MacDonald said:
“It was a pleasure to meet Douglas Alexander and welcome him to NB Distillery. With recent news that Sir Keir Starmer is supporting pubs and bars nationally it’s important that Distillers and Spirit producers across the UK also have the support of government. With the rise of duty again, the ongoing costs related to Brexit and further increases in NI it is in the Government’s interest to safeguard distillers and producers who are significant contributors to the overall wealth of Britain.
“It’s vital that the UK Government protect and promote our spirits industry and the associated revenues. As a small craft distillery we do not have the luxury of larger companies and their economies of scale but we are all an essential part of our respective communities and the overall wealth of Scotland and Great Britain. I appreciate the time Douglas Alexander is committing to meet and speak with distillers and producers and hope that a strong argument is raised that safeguards our futures.”
