Douglas Alexander MP for Lothian East constituency
Douglas Alexander MP has joined a cross-party group of colleagues at a roundtable discussion on the future of the Brunton in Musselburgh.
Hosted by Lothians MSP Sarah Boyack at North Esk Church, the event was attended by Brunton Theatre trust representatives, councillors, MSPs and MPs.
The Brunton Hall and Theatre was permanently closed and mothballed last October due to the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).
Since the closure, there has been widespread support from across the community to ensure that Musselburgh is not left without a theatre, including a petition which has garnered thousands of signatures.
This support for a replacement facility was echoed from all sides of the roundtable, with agreement on the need for a new theatre to be located in the town.
Commenting after the event, Douglas Alexander MP said:
“In these often polarised times, it was good to join with other local representatives in a genuinely constructive cross-party meeting to discuss the future of the Brunton Theatre site.
“I was pleased to participate in the discussion and reiterate my support for a replacement theatre and arts facility in Musselburgh, which is clearly also the view of most local residents.”
