The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has launched the inaugural MP’s Choice: Food and Drink Manufacturer of the Year Award, with Members of Parliament calling for nominations of outstanding small and medium-sized (SME) food and drink manufacturers in their constituencies. Nominations are now open.

The award celebrates the vital role SMEs play in shaping the future of UK food and drink manufacturing. The sector contributes over £38 billion to the UK economy, accounts for almost a quarter (24.2%) of total manufacturing turnover and supports half a million jobs nationwide. In Scotland, it contributes £5.2 billion to the economy, providing 47,000 jobs across 1,220 businesses.

MPs are looking for local food and drink manufacturers who demonstrate excellence in innovation, sustainability, workforce development and wellbeing, and community engagement.

How to nominate:

The deadline for submissions is 23.59pm on Monday 20th November.

For more information, or to put forward an SME, please contact Douglas Alexander MP at douglas.alexander.mp@parliament.uk.

Douglas Alexander MP said: “Our small and medium sized food manufacturers are so much more than just the products they create – they are passionate entrepreneurs and teams, crafting delicious and nutritious food and drink, while enriching our communities and creating local jobs. I encourage everyone to put forward deserving nominations and help us showcase the very best that East Lothian has to offer.”

Karen Betts, Chief Executive of the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), said: “The MP’s Choice Award shines a spotlight on the outstanding commitment of the thousands of SMEs across our sector to create wonderful food and drink that brings pleasure to everyone every day. At a time when food and drink manufacturing is facing significant pressures, it’s more important than ever to celebrate the small businesses that are the backbone of our industry, and contribute so much to driving innovation, resilience and sustainable growth.”

Entries will be judged by a panel of industry experts led by Jim Bligh, the Food and Drink Federation’s Director of Corporate Affairs and Packaging, FDF.

Regional finalists will be announced on Friday 5 December, coinciding with Small Business Saturday. The overall winner will be revealed in January 2026 and honoured at a parliamentary reception attended by MPs, FDF representatives and industry leaders.
