Douglas Alexander MP for Lothian East constituency
A historic North Berwick pub that re-opened in September after a six-year closure received a visit from Douglas Alexandar, MP for Lothian East and Secretary of State Scotland last week. He saw first-hand what the £850,000 transformation by Heineken-owned Star Pubs and Scottish hospitality operators, The Discovery Group has created.
The Law opened its doors on the 17th September, creating 30 new jobs in the town with North Berwick resident Donna McCallum at the helm.
The revamp has completely remodelled the building to a high standard, replacing everything from the lights to the loos. Outside there’s a stunning 100-seater garden. Inside the venue caters for all and every occasion. The ground floor boasts a comfortable contemporary bar with screens as well as a second bar – The Beach House – overlooking the rear garden and with its own pizza oven. Converted from a former stable, it retains the old doors, beams and stone walls as part of its distinctive design. The two floors above house a beautifully-decorated restaurant – bookable for functions – and 11 letting rooms.
The Law’s new general manager Donna McCallum said:
“I’ve lived in North Berwick for years and never dreamed one day I would run The Law. It’s great news for the town to have it open again and looking so fantastic – it’s a real asset.”
Discovery Group director Andrena Bowes said:
“As a team we at the Discovery Group saw the potential in the site but knew the refurbishment would require a good partnership to make it come alive again. We were blown away by the reaction to the venue’s launch.”
Douglas Alexander MP said:
“It was a real pleasure to visit the newly refurbished Law in North Berwick with the fantastic team behind the project. Their hard work and vision have transformed this venue into a lively, welcoming space after years of closure. Local businesses like this are vital to East Lothian’s economy and character, and I’m delighted to see it thriving.”
Guy Mason, Heineken’s Head of Public Affairs said:
“We were delighted to welcome the Secretary of State to The Law as this is our largest investment of the year in Scotland, and it’s reflected in the transformation. Pubs are at the heart of our communities, providing welcoming spaces for people to connect with friends and family, celebrate milestones, and support each other during difficult times. We explored the current challenges confronting community pubs and the wider hospitality sector, and also considered the vital role they play as local employers.”
