Douglas Alexander MP has written to schools in his Lothian East constituency urging them to get involved in this year’s UK Parliament Week (UKPW) which is taking place from 23-29 November.
The annual event aims to involve the public in finding out more about UK Parliament, what it does, and how they can get involved in its work. Last year, UKPW reached 2.8 million people, including over 2.7 million school-aged children, with 85% of teachers taking part saying UKPW helped them reach their curriculum aims.
This year, UKPW’s theme is media and political literacy, aiming to help young people of all ages develop skills to evaluate information, understand how news and politics influence society, and how to make informed decisions.
Everyone who signs up for UK Parliament Week will be posted a free kit packed with resources, including a booklet (with information and activity ideas tailored for youth groups, primary and secondary schools, or adults), a ballot box, bunting and stickers.
As well as exploring UK Parliament and ways to get involved, this year’s UKPW throws a spotlight on the various roles and people who help to keep our Parliament running.

“Many schools from this constituency have participated in the week in the past and I’m urging them to join in again this year and get engaged with understanding the work of the UK Parliament.”
