Douglas Alexander MP for Lothian East constituency
Douglas Alexander MP visited the D&M Brass Band at their Prestonpans rehearsal facility this week to hear directly about the band’s role in both musical tuition for local people and their wider contribution to the community here in East Lothian.
Mr Alexander met with band chair Jim Henderson to discuss the group’s history and structure, the importance of youth and community music, and the current challenges faced by volunteer-led organisations. He was then given a tour of the rehearsal space before meeting the band’s musical director, Jim Chamberlain, and other members, who performed a medley of music from the James Bond films.
Formed in 1989 from the merger of the former Dalkeith Burgh and Monktonhall Colliery bands, with roots dating back to 1883, the D&M Brass Band continues to play a vital role in the local music scene. The band recently changed its name to better reflect its heritage in Prestonpans as it seeks charitable incorporation.
Entirely self-funded and made up of amateur musicians, D&M Brass performs regularly across East Lothian and remains an active presence at both community events and national competitions. In addition to the senior band, a training band offers low-cost music tuition and performance opportunities to learners and experienced players of all ages and abilities.
Douglas Alexander MP said:
“It was a real pleasure to meet the members of this band with such deep local roots. Their medley of Bond music that they were rehearsing when I arrived sounded brilliant. Community music groups like the D&M Brass Band not only preserve a proud cultural tradition but also bring people together across generations. The band and its dedicated team of volunteers and players deserve our full support.”
Jim Henderson Said:
“We were delighted to welcome Douglas Alexander to our Red School rehearsal space and share more about the band’s history and ongoing work in the community. Our players, from beginners to long-standing members, are passionate about keeping this tradition alive, and it means a lot to have that effort recognised and supported.”
The band took tenancy in the Red School in September 2021 and welcomes experienced brass players and percussionists as well as learners, casual players, and volunteers. Anyone interested can contact Heather the band secretary at secretarydmbrass@gmail.com or through the band’s website. The band is also active on X (formerly twitter) and Facebook.
